North Carolina Sewer Pipeline Materials

For decades, cast iron pipelines have been commonly used in North Carolina. These cast iron pipelines become pitted and flaky as they age. As portions of the pipeline wall flake away, tree and shrub roots are able to push through the narrower, softer spots and gain access to the moisture inside the pipeline. After this, the roots tend to create a tangle that causes other materials to catch and snag, eventually creating a blockage.

The other material often used to construct our Charlotte, North Carolina sewer pipelines is terracotta clay. As these pipelines grow old, the clay can become brittle. When the pipeline is surrounded by roots that tighten and squeeze, or when the line is twisted by the general shifting of the soil, the clay tends to crack. The cracks allow the entry of soil and roots. Over time this access allows snags to grow inside the pipeline.

Once a blockage begins to occur, the building’s owner will begin to notice strange odors and, eventually, liquid backing up into the building.

North Carolina Weather and Soil Conditions and Your Sewer Pipeline

In the Charlotte, NC area we experience both drought and flooding periods. Both types of weather tend to occur from July to September. Dry periods are common and can extend for weeks or months. Flooding can occur from hard-hitting summer storms that drop 10 inches of rain or more from hurricanes that typically arrive in the late summer or early fall. On the average 40” of rainfall during these months is commonplace.

During the dry times, tree and shrubs located near underground sewer pipelines tend to take advantage of aging, thinning, or cracking pipes. During the flooding season, the municipal main sewer line can become so flooded that the rainwater is forced back through the building’s sewer pipeline and straight up into sinks and showers. Next Level is aware of how our seasons can affect sewer pipelines and we are fully prepared to help you prevent any of these cracking or blockage conditions. We recommend scheduled sewer pipeline inspections so that any cracks or flaking spots can be resolved before negative symptoms begin to occur.

Scheduled Pipeline Inspections and Repairs

Our inspections begin with a sewer pipeline camera inspection. We insert a robotic camera into your pipeline and view every inch from the building to the street side city main. Should a snag be located, it is removed by using highly pressurized water or a robotic cutter. When cracks are located the pipeline is quickly repaired by a resurfacing of the interior pipeline wall.

Flood Gate Valves

We can also prevent flooding backups into your pipeline by installing a Flood Gate Automatic Back Water Valve. This valve does not require electricity. The pressure created by the water backing up from the city main causes a gate to lower and close off your sewer pipeline. As the floodwaters recede, the gate is released back to the open position.
