Sewer Drain Pipe Cracks

Weather changes in the Charlotte, North Carolina area can cause both soaking and drying of our soil. Over time, these changes can cause shifts in the soil. Many of our building’s sewer pipelines are constructed of aging terracotta clay that are sensitive to these conditions and can crack or break when soil pressures shift and change.

Once a sewer pipeline crack is created, surrounding trees and shrubs will begin to send root ends towards the crack in search of water. After the roots enter the pipeline they can grow and enlarge quickly, further cracking or completely breaking the pipeline.

We utilize trenchless sewer inspection and repair methods to repair any cracked sewer drain pipes. Our methods are environmentally-friendly and do not require digging from the surface to reach the buried pipeline. Driveways, patios, and carefully landscaped grounds are left undisturbed.

Sewer Camera Inspection

We begin our consultation by performing a sewer camera inspection. We use a robotic camera attached to an optic cable to inspect every inch of the sewer pipeline, straight down to its connection with the city main. The optic cable sends video feedback to our technician on the surface. Our technician will use to video to determine the condition of the pipeline.

Cracked Pipe Repair and Replacement Charlotte

If cracks are located during the inspection, we are able to repair them using a Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) lining. During this trenchless repair process, a flexible felt tubing saturated with an epoxy resin is inserted into the pipeline. The liner is pressed and held against the interior wall of the sewer pipeline by forcing steam into the pipe. Once the resin has cured, the liner is removed. This repair usually requires only a few hours. When the process is complete, a new, durable interior pipe wall has been created. For buildings with storm drains that connect laterally underground with the sewer pipeline, a robotic cutter is inserted at the end of the CIPP lining procedure to reopen the intersection with the lateral storm drainpipe.

Occasionally, the crack is too large for the CIPP lining method to be used. If this is found to be the case, Next Level uses the trenchless method of pipe bursting to replace the line. Pipe bursting uses the original pipe as a guide for inserting a new pipeline underground. On the far end of the original pipeline, a pulling machine is connected to a chain that is fed through the line. At the beginning end of the original pipeline, the chain is connected to a torpedo shaped pipe-bursting head which is then connected to the new incoming pipeline. As the pulling machine draws the chain back through the original pipeline, the pipe bursting head slowly fragments the original pipe, pushing the shards safely into the surrounding soil as it drags the new pipeline underground. At the end of the process, the new pipeline lies exactly where the old pipeline resided, safely nestled underground.
